Versie 18.10 van Ubuntu Linux is uitgekomen, en ook doorgedruppeld naar de smaken Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio en Xubuntu. Versie 18.10 is een normale uitgave. Deze verschijnt twee keer per jaar, rond april en november, en wordt voor negen maanden bijgehouden. De Long-Term Support-versie verschijnt eens in de twee jaar en wordt vervolgens vijf jaar van updates voorzien. Optimised for multi-cloud computing Ubuntu Server 18.10 images are available on all major public clouds, including minimal images popular for container workloads with a small footprint and fast boot time. For private clouds, Ubuntu 18.10 ships with OpenStack Rocky for AI and NFV hardware acceleration and Ceph Mimic to reduce storage overhead. Ubuntu Server 18.10 includes the latest Kubernetes version 1.12 which brings increased security and scalability by automating the provisioning of clusters with transport layer encryption and is more responsive to dynamic workloads through faster scaling. Snap momentum strengthens Ubuntu?s secure Linux app store sports 4,100 snaps published by 1,700 developers and supported across 41 Linux distributions. Official desktop snaps from Spotify, Plex and Skype are popular, and major public cloud and server applications are now available including Google Cloud SDK, AWS CLI and Azure CLI. The new release enables native desktop controls to access files on the host system. Improved gaming performance The Linux 4.18 kernel together with updates in Mesa and X.org significantly improve game performance. Graphics support expands to AMD VegaM in the latest Intel Kabylake-G CPUs, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, B+ and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Ubuntu 18.10 introduces the GNOME 3.30 desktop and Yaru, the new community-developed default theme. Fingerprint unlock functionality is featured for compatible PCs and the latest versions of Firefox, LibreOffice, and Chromium are included.

Acronis Backup is een uitgebreid programma waarmee back-ups kunnen worden gemaakt en het richt zich op bedrijfsomgevingen. Het pakket bevat tal van opties om data veilig te stellen op fysieke en virtuele servers en kan daarnaast worden geïntegreerd met verschillende cloudomgevingen, zoals Office 365, Azure en Amazon EC2. Ook kan blockchain-technologie ingezet worden met Acronis Notary, dat beschikbaar is via een uitgebreide licentie. Virtualisatie heeft in de laatste jaren een prominente plek veroverd. Bekende namen zijn onder andere Xen en VMware. Het complete platform van VMware heet vSphere en bestaat uit verschillende componenten, zoals vCenter Server, waarmee een complete virtuele omgeving kan worden beheerd, en natuurlijk de hypervisor ESXi, waarop virtuele machines hun werk kunnen doen. GitLab kun je vergelijken met het bekendere GitHub, maar bevat een aantal subtiele verschillen. Het is een omgeving voor het beheren van Git-repositories on-premises. Het wordt uitgegeven onder de MIT Expat-licentie en ontwikkeld in Ruby on Rails. Het is beschikbaar in twee versies, namelijk de gratis te gebruiken Community Edition en een betaalde Enterprise Edition, met meer functies die op grote bedrijven zijn gericht. Building on Code Owners from the 11.3 release, GitLab can now suggest who should review and approve a specific merge request based on the CODEOWNERS file. This way, you can quickly and efficiently get changes reviewed and approved. This will also be useful when defining separation of duties and roles on a team, where you want to have defined reviewers for certain parts of the code. The addition of the file tree view to the merge request makes it easier and faster for reviewers to navigate through multiple changed files and then provide their feedback. Feature flags We are introducing an Alpha version of Feature Flags, a feature toggle system. Teams can now practice Continuous Delivery by deploying new features to production in small batches, mitigating risk before a full rollout. Auto DevOps and CI/CD We’re also updating the ability for all users to take advantage of having Include files in their .gitlab-ci.yml files, moving it from Starter to Core. This will make it easier for all teams to leverage this best practice and more efficiently manage their CI/CD pipelines. Extra polish Together with the wider GitLab community, there are many more wonderful improvements we have included in this release including a new profile layout, faster access to your profile status, highlighted @mentions, new quick actions, and the ability to close epics. Ruby is afgeleid van het Engelse woord voor robijn, een woordspeling op Perl. De auteur zegt dat hij Ruby gemaakt heeft om ‘het principe van de minste verrassing’ te volgen, waarmee hij bedoelt dat de taal vrij moet zijn van de angels en voetklemmen die andere talen teisteren. Mozilla heeft versie 63 van zijn webbrowser Firefox uitgebracht, de zevende versie gebaseerd op Firefox Quantum.
