Versie 7.8.6 van Notepad++ is uitgekomen. Deze uitgebreide teksteditor heeft diverse mogelijkheden die vooral voor programmeurs handig zijn, zoals syntax-highlighting voor onder andere C, C++, Java, html, xml en php. Ook biedt het programma de mogelijkheid om meer dan één document tegelijk te bewerken of één document op twee verschillende plaatsen te onderhouden. Wie de nieuwste versie wil gebruiken, moet deze zelf downloaden. De ingebouwde updater van Notepad++ biedt updates namelijk pas een week na hun verschijnen aan, om eventuele ernstige bugs nog te kunnen oplossen. Viscosity is een door SparkLabs ontwikkelde OpenVPN-client voor macOS- en Windows-systemen. Het programma maakt het op een eenvoudige manier mogelijk om vpn-connecties aan te maken, te bewerken en te beheren. De ontwikkelaars hebben eerder deze maand versie 1.8.5 voor zowel macOS als Windows uitgebracht. De bijbehorende aankondiging ziet er als volgt uit: Viscosity For Mac & Windows: Version 1.8.5 Viscosity version 1.8.5 is now available for both macOS and Windows! This update is primarily a maintenance release to keep Viscosity and your VPN connections running smoothly. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve limited this update to bug fixes and small improvements only, with no major changes. We’ve received countless reports of Viscosity playing a widespread and vital role for businesses and educational institutions with staff working from home. In such an environment the last thing we want is for changes to Viscosity’s behaviour or user interface to surprise users or add additional workload to already overburdened staff. On the macOS side, this update resolves a number of rare crashes that have been reported to us, as well as an issue that could prevent custom menu item scripts in a bundled version of Viscosity from running. An issue where Full DNS wouldn’t be applied when using a split-routed TAP/bridged connection using DHCP for IP assignment has also been resolved. The Windows version has a number of small improvements to both the DNS and networking to improve reliability, especially in certain enterprise setups. In particular, Viscosity is now better able to prevent loopback DNS settings remaining in rare situations caused by a Windows crash or surprise hardware removal. An issue where users may not get prompted for their U2F credentials on some Windows 10 machines has been resolved, as well as an issue that could cause VPN connections to fail to automatically reconnect. We’re also aware of difficulty using the SafeNet Authentication Client (SAC) PKCS#11 driver with Viscosity 1.8.4 and earlier on macOS 10.15. The driver does not confirm to macOS 10.15’s dynamic library linking requirements, and so macOS blocks it from loading. We’ve been informed that updating to the latest version of the driver (10.2 Post GA R2) should resolve this. For those stuck on older versions of the driver, we’ve also managed to implement a workaround in Viscosity to allow the driver to load. We’ve also received reports of two enterprise security software packages, namely “SentinelOne” and “Digital Guardian”, causing Viscosity to crash under macOS 10.15. Users have reported crashes when attempting to launch Viscosity, when attempting to connect a VPN connection, or when clicking on a password field. The fault lies with these software packages being incompatible with macOS 10.15’s “hardened runtime” requirement. The developers of both software packages have reported this has been fixed in their respective latest versions. If you are using a workplace-supplied device and are experiencing these crashes, please ask your IT staff to update the relevant software to the latest version. Users with TAP connections upgrading to macOS 10.15.4 may also receive a “Legacy System Extension” warning from macOS, indicating that future versions of macOS may no longer support the TAP driver. Rest assured that we have already been working on a solution for the next major version of macOS. Finally, this update also updates OpenSSL to version 1.1.1f for both platforms. Traditionally, these features would never have been added to a branch in maintenance mode, but exceptions were made to keep Python 2 users secure. Python 2.7 was lucky to have the services of two generations of binary builders and operating system experts, Martin von Löwis and Steve Dower for Windows, and Ronald Oussoren and Ned Deily for macOS. The reason we provided binary Python 2.7 releases for macOS 10.9, an operating system obsoleted by Apple 4 years ago, or why the “Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler for Python 2.7” exists is the dedication of these individuals. Python 3 would be nowhere without the dedication of the wider community. Library maintainers followed CPython by maintaining Python 2 support for many years but also threw their weight behind the Python 3 statement. Linux distributors chased Python 2 out of their archives. Users migrated hundreds of millions of lines of code, developed porting guides, and kept Python 2 in their brain while Python 3 gained 10 years of improvements. NTWind Software heeft versie 5.2.5 van WinSnap uitgebracht. Met dit programma is het mogelijk om screenshots in Windows te maken. Ook kunnen verschillende vensters en opengeklapte pull-down-menu’s worden vastgelegd. Verder kunnen er bewerkingen op de afbeeldingen worden uitgevoerd, zoals het toevoegen van een schaduw of een watermerk, en het aanpassen van helderheid en kleuren. De download is klein en een levenslange licentie kost dertig dollar, waar tijdelijk 20% korting op wordt gegeven. Plex heeft versie 1.19.1.2645 van Plex Media Server uitgebracht. Deze versie was eerder al voor houders van de betaalde PlexPass beschikbaar, maar kan inmiddels door iedereen worden gedownload. Plex Media Server is een mediaserver voor Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, macOS en diverse nas-apparaten. De software kan content serveren aan clients op dezelfde machine binnen het lokale netwerk of via internet. Clientsoftware is beschikbaar voor de eerder genoemde besturingssystemen maar content kan ook worden bekeken op bijvoorbeeld iOS, Android, Google TV en Chromecast. Het programma bevat een eigen softwarewinkel waar plug-ins kunnen worden uitgewisseld. Via deze plug-ins kan onder meer content van diverse streamingdiensten worden bekeken. Daarnaast is er PlexPass, een betaalde dienst die eerder toegang tot nieuwe versies geeft naast korting op ‘Premium features’. De changelog sinds versie 1.18.6.2368 ziet er als volgt uit:

Er is een ontwikkelversie van de opensource-ftp-client FileZilla is verschenen. FileZilla is klein, simpel en toch compleet. Het programma is populair vanwege de geringe belasting van de systeembronnen. FileZilla is beschikbaar voor Windows, Linux en macOS. Sinds versie 3.26.0 worden wachtwoorden ook versleuteld en beveiligd op de computer opgeslagen. Tegenwoordig is er ook een Pro-versie, die tegen een kleine vergoeding ondersteuning biedt voor diverse online opslagdiensten. Wees voorzichtig met het ‘aanbevolen’ downloadbestand, want dat wordt gebundeld met software van derden. Op deze pagina zijn installatiebestanden te vinden die geen extra componenten bevatten.
